Bazzing About

Why is it that tourists discover all the hot travel secrets while locals remain ignorant of what’s on their doorstep?

Take for example Baz Bus – South Africa’s convenient hop-on-hop-off, door-to-door backpacker bus service. Step aboard and you’ll hear Oz, Pom, German, American, Dutch….but little good old Sef Efrican being spoken.

Yet for young – and even not so young travellers, Baz Bus is the perfect way to explore South Africa. All you need is your final destination and the rest of your itinerary can be entirely flexible. There’s no time limit on your ticket so you can hop off at as many places as your choose and stay as long as you want.

And it stops at the door of over 180 backpacker lodges countrywide. For more inaccessible places like Port St Johns, Hogsback, Lesotho and even Maputo, shuttles meet the bus en route. Apart from set routes, the Baz also offers special interest tours such as the hiking and biking day tour of the Cape Peninsula.

All Baz buses are 22-seater Mercedes Benzes with trailers, which means there is plenty of space for surfboards, guitars and other toys. Just don’t take the Baz if you are in a hurry – with all the stops it takes a lot longer than a regular bus service. But, Hey what’s the rush, Bru?

A Garden Route hop (Cape Town to Port Elizabeth return) costs R 745.00, while one-way Cape Town to Durban costs R 1020.00. For other routes and bookings phone (021) 439 2323, fax (021) 439 2343 or e-mail LoadEmail('General Enquiry') . You’ll find all the prices and other details you need at
